Cost-of-Switching Calculator: Compostable Bagasse vs Plastic
Unit price is only part of the story. Enter your numbers to compare the total annual cost of your current plastic packaging against compostable bagasse, including the UK Plastic Packaging Tax you avoid (£228.82 per tonne from 1 April 2026) and freight on the new material.
Not in the UK? Set recycled content to 30% to remove the tax line, and check bans in your market with the Compliance Checker.
Annual cost, side by side
Bars scale to the higher total. Plastic includes the packaging tax; bagasse includes freight and pays no tax.

A note on assumptions
This is an estimate of direct annual cost. It does not include single-use plastic ban penalties, ESG or brand value, disposal savings, or tooling amortization for custom SKUs. Real economics usually improve further once these are counted. For a firm landed price, send your specifications below.
This calculator gives estimates for planning only, not a quote. Verify unit prices, freight and tax against your own figures and official sources before relying on it.
Spot an error? Tell usHow to compare the true cost of switching from plastic to bagasse
Most procurement teams reject compostable packaging on one number: the unit price. It is the most common, and most expensive, mistake in foodservice sourcing, because unit price is only one of four costs that change when you move off plastic. A clamshell that looks two-tenths of a penny cheaper can end up more expensive once tax, freight and regulatory risk are counted. Here is how to read the calculator above and build a fair, like-for-like comparison.
Unit price is not landed cost
Landed cost is what a case of packaging actually costs you, delivered, after every line item. For plastic that includes the resin price, conversion, freight and, in a growing list of markets, a packaging tax. For bagasse it includes the moulded-fibre price and freight, but no plastic tax and no exposure to single-use plastic bans. Comparing sticker prices alone ignores the two lines that increasingly favour fibre.
The four costs that change when you switch
- Unit price difference. Bagasse typically runs 5 to 12 percent above virgin plastic at full-container-load volumes. On thin, high-volume items the gap can be wider; on rigid containers it is often smaller.
- Plastic tax avoided. In the UK, plastic packaging with less than 30 percent recycled content is taxed at £228.82 per tonne (from 1 April 2026, reviewed each April). Bagasse is natural fibre, not plastic, so it sits outside the tax entirely.
- Freight and duty. Imported fibre carries a freight and duty adder, usually a small percentage of unit cost at FCL. This is the one line that works against switching, and it shrinks as volume rises.
- Ban and penalty exposure. The line most calculators ignore. In the UK, EU, India and the UAE, many single-use plastic foodservice items are not just taxed, they are banned. Where a ban applies, plastic is not the cheaper option, it is not an option at all.
A worked example
Take one million clamshells a year at 15 grams each. At £0.040 per plastic unit that is £40,000 in units, plus £3,432 in plastic tax (15 tonnes at £228.82), for £43,432. The same million in bagasse at £0.044 with 6 percent freight is roughly £46,640. On paper switching costs about £3,200 more, or three-tenths of a penny per unit. Now weigh that against the ban: if those clamshells fall under a single-use plastic prohibition in your market, the plastic option carries a compliance risk that no small unit saving offsets.
How the plastic tax closes the gap
The UK tax is index-linked and has risen every year since 2022. As the rate climbs and recycled-content requirements tighten, the crossover point moves steadily in favour of fibre. If your plastic packaging has less than 30 percent recycled content, the tax alone often covers most of the unit-price premium, and the gap narrows further each April.
What drives the bagasse premium
Three things move the bagasse price: order volume, product spec and tooling. At full-container-load volumes the premium narrows sharply. Standard shapes cost less than custom tooling, which is amortised over a SKU's life. Minimum order quantities matter too: consolidating SKUs into fewer, larger runs lowers the per-unit price. This is why the calculator above is directional, and why the real number comes from a quote against your actual volume and specifications.
When switching pays for itself
Switching tends to be cash-neutral or cash-positive when two or more of these are true:
- Your plastic has under 30 percent recycled content, so you are paying the full tax.
- You buy at FCL volumes, so the freight adder is small.
- Your items fall under a current or announced single-use plastic ban.
- You sell into markets where buyers now require compostable or plastic-free packaging.
If that describes your line, model your numbers above, then request a firm quote.
Beyond cost: compliance is becoming non-negotiable
Cost is only half the decision. Before you compare prices, check whether plastic is even permitted for your product in your market. Our Packaging Compliance Checker shows the bans, taxes and certifications required by country, and our market pages cover sourcing into the UK, USA, India and UAE. To isolate the UK tax line on its own, use the Plastic Tax Calculator.

Frequently Asked
Cost of switching, answered
What procurement teams weigh before moving off plastic.
Does compostable bagasse cost more than plastic?
The unit price is typically 5 to 12% higher, but that is only part of the picture. Once you add the plastic packaging tax you avoid and the single-use plastic ban penalties you sidestep, the total landed cost is often comparable or lower. This calculator shows the full comparison.
What is included in the cost of switching?
Three things: the unit-price difference between your current plastic and bagasse, the plastic packaging tax you no longer pay, and the freight and duty on the new material. Together these give the true annual cost difference.
Do I still pay Plastic Packaging Tax on bagasse?
No. Bagasse is natural moulded fibre, not plastic, so it is outside the UK Plastic Packaging Tax of £228.82 per tonne. Estimate your tax exposure.
How much does bulk (FCL) ordering reduce the premium?
At full-container-load volumes the bagasse premium typically narrows. Request a quote for your volume to see the real landed price.
